The diversity of human experience.
This is accurately portrayed by the wide array of activities that could happen in the park. Someone could use it as a resting spot, a destination, a place on their way to their destination, a clock, a restroom, or a congregation point; people from all different backgrounds can come together at this place and feel their needs for a park are met. I asked many different people their opinion on public parks, and their answers heavily influenced the making of the design of these things.

 2. Inquiry and Critical Thinking
A lot of thought went into the design of this park. The design of the bathrooms, bus stops, time piece; even down to the water draining system was carefully analyzed and manipulated according to the site. With the time piece especially, you are able to tell the time; but not only are you able to tell time, but also you are able to estimate the date as well. Time and thought went into this creation, making it a suitable candidate for this goal.

These were my thoughts and records:

 •	Every one of the public parks serves a purpose. E.g. Pioneer Square: to unite Portlanders with a “living room” of sorts.

 •	Relaxing environment- people go there to sit, to read, to watch their children play, etc.

 •	The sun played a definite role in the park’s existence it is important that a park gets ample sun without shade on sunny days (location)

 •	This becomes an intimate space: people are relatively friendly when congregated in a park.

 •	Parks change their function over time.

 •	A crossroads of people coming in from different directions and leaving at different directions.

I surveyed a few people along the way:

 •	People like to have lots of sitting space; but not too much that it becomes a nuisance.

 •	People want to be able to see the time when there on their lunch break or pressed for time.

 •	People Need a public restroom because there are not enough; without being “customers” to the owners of the bathroom.

 •	People enjoy the sun.

 •	People want to see some kind of nature integrated within a park structure.

 •	People love to be entertained while enjoying their stay at the park.

 •	People want to have access to public transit to expedite the time from home or work.

Reflective Essay

 Josh Garvison
 Reflection
 5/25/09

Reflection

Reflection: what is it? Technically, the most appropriate definition would be the fixing of the thoughts of something, or careful consideration. In this case, I am going to present my fixated thoughts on the first year of my college experience; including my university studies freshman inquiry, Design and Society. I believe my first experience of college was very informative. It taught me many things about myself.

My first days at Portland State University were filled with enjoyment and anxiety. Not knowing what to expect was something that filled me with stress. Stress has been an enormous factor in my day to day life, and until the architecture studio started, I did not even know what stress was. Once architecture started, I had never had to stay the night at school, spend fifty (or more) hours working on school, or ever had to put forth all of my energy towards school. I also accepted a job at Papa Murphy’s Pizza, in Oregon City, to pay for the spendy expenditures of the architecture program. But this essay is not about my hard schedule, or how expensive college is; it is more importantly about what I have learned.

Knowledge is something more powerful than anything in the world. Without knowledge, where would the human race be? What is knowledge? Knowledge is the acquaintance of facts, truths, policies, and principles as from studies, investigation, and experience. We as humans have dominated this world, gaining knowledge along the way. One way to gain knowledge and experience is to experience the world of college. We as college students invest in our futures and gain knowledge. There has been so much I have learned, this year alone. I have not only gained “book-smarts,” but I have also learned a plethora about myself.

I have learned that I have a quite complicated mind. I believe that I think and dwell, an extraordinary amount more than the normal person: introducing our first University Studies Goal; Inquiry and Critical Thinking. Whether or not this is a good thing, is a problem unto itself. I spend the majority of my time critically analyzing situations, problems, dilemma, and objects, while doing my daily routine. This can be a burden or the contrary: Sometimes, I dwell too much, giving me time to construe information and come up to an incorrect result; other times it is a blessing, giving me the freedom to analyze and read the information correctly and completely, producing the best situation. This ability has been very useful in all of my classes.

My architecture class is all about analyzing a site, and designing a place to dwell. Dwelling was a very foreign concept to me, because it is a more complicated word than one would think. We as humans dwell no matter where we go. Architecture is just a means to produce a place to dwell: a truck driver dwells in his truck, a receptionist in her cubicle. The ability to analyze and interpret sites, plots, and designs has given me a foothold in the architectural realm.

More specifically Design and Society deals with the interpretation of data presented in the form of societal based need. We design in order to fulfill the wants and needs of a wide array of people, cultures, and biases. This is very specific to the University Studies Goal “Diversity of Human Experience.” The diversity of human experience on this planet is crucial to producing a great design. Without fulfilling a variety of needs there would be only a small clientele for your design and it, most likely, will not last. We have done many assignments that have had to do with the diversity of human experience. In the first term, we designed a new product (of our choice), and had to explore, research, and study our object in order to produce a sufficient design. I personally chose to re-design a chair that could be used for multiple uses, such as the arms up and down to fit under a low table, and made the whole chair customizable in order to broaden the comfort and versatility ranges. Without communication though, we would be no way to express what our personal needs were: which brings me to the next University Studies Goal.

Communication is critical when it comes to the relay of information to one another. We have begun to master this technique in many forms. We have gone from Morse code to the land-line to binary and cell phones. We, in my Design and Society class have begun to touch on this goal using a number of different assignments. Assignments like the podcast or even just the class website all propose communication as a tool. The podcast, in my opinion, was highly important, showing us different strategies of communication and the variety of the tools that can be used. Our class website is a prime example of how effective communication is, and what a powerful impact it can have on one’s grade and bias in the class. The “wiki” has been a very influential tool of the “success” in Design and Society; it has informed us of grades, given a weekly planner, uncovered new assignments, and shown us the way. Without the class website, the whole class would have a different atmosphere.

I have also learned that I have a responsibility for sustainability. We all have a social responsibility to create and promote a sustainable future by protecting our environment and build a self-sustaining future for our children and theirs. We have had many projects geared toward sustainability such as the book relating to sustainability. Each of us read books that touched on the future in some way. I read The Long Emergency, by James Kunstler. Kunstler speaks about the ending of gasoline and how it will affect the world as we know it. We as humans have become so reliant on petroleum based products that we have “done ourselves in.” Kunstler states that if we do not reform now that we will suffer an extreme loss and quite possibly become extinct. It is a radical idea, but his theory is completely legitimate. Why not other forms of energy? No other form of energy combined will give us the power that fossil fuels have. We have exacerbated more than half of our supply of fuels, and are still using at an extremely alarming rate. How can we save ourselves from eminent demise? We need to start reforming the way we live day to day. We need to get out of the habit of supporting a suburban sprawl; the distance between your work and house. We need to work close to where we live and cease relying on a car and fuel to live. We need more self-sustaining small communities that thrive on themselves. This is very important in the world today and I have learned this. Before this class, I never thought that our generation has so much responsibility to promote a sustainable future. This correlates to the University Studies Goal of Ethics and Social Responsibility.

I have learned a lot in this class, and gained a plethora of knowledge this year. This year has been filled with ups and downs, but the important thing is that I have learned many, many things about myself. I thank the University Studies Program for giving me a chance to learn and gain knowledge of many backgrounds. This program has been very beneficial in beginning my college experience and will help me excel in future college experience.
